The history of South Africa can be divided into three distinct periods: pre-colonial, colonial, and post-apartheid. During the pre-colonial period, the people of the region were primarily divided into many different ethnic and cultural groups.

These included the Khoisan, Bantu, and San peoples.

During this time, the area was largely unexplored and the land was divided into various tribal regions. The colonial period saw the arrival of the Dutch, who established the Cape Colony in .

This colony later became the British Cape Colony in , and the Union of South Africa in .

This period saw the introduction of a new form of government, as well as the introduction of western culture and education. The post-apartheid period began in with the election of Nelson Mandela as the first president of a democratically elected government. This period saw an end to racial segregation and the beginning of reconciliation between different racial and cultural groups. It also saw a return to democracy and the introduction of a new constitution that recognized the rights of all citizens.
