to 25 percent of their own body weight in a single feeding Only the males have manes which develop between 2 to 3 years of age Some males remain mane less but their size and muscle structure distinguish them from the females Both the Lion and the Lioness can make for an extremely exciting hunt with Witkop Safaris This member of the Big Five deserves your utmost respect He is extremely nimble and fast able to cover 100 yards in 3 to 4 seconds Unpredictable as your house cat and extremely vindictive this tenacious cat will finish what he starts and is well equipped to make short work of a man An ambush predator if he is hurt and he knows what has hurt him he will be intent on doing something about it Hunt Leo with Witkop Safaris with a minimum of the 375 caliber as is the lawful minimum in most African countries One shot kills with the 375 cannot always be guaranteed so you may consider a larger caliber if you shoot it well First shot placement is all important as the follow up on a wounded cat can be extremely exciting if not downright dangerous when hunting Lion with Witkop Safaris Place your shot well behind the shoulder and about on the midline of the body In the frontal presentation aim dead center in the chest A poorly shot Lion will lie in wait and is capable of great speed in a charge When he charges he will target just one of the hunting party and will be intent on doing deadly harm It has been proposed by some that the rifle used for the follow up on a wounded Lion is not the same rifle you used for the initial shot If available use the

moving and grazing as he goes At night they tend to herd up to protect the young from their archenemy the Lion Both sexes carry horns however the horns of a bull can be quite spectacular in spread deep curl and a solid boss covering the forehead Cows lack the boss but can have a very wide spread in fact the world record buffalo on file in the Roland Ward record book is a cow with a spread of some 64 inches With a well placed shot a rifle of 375 caliber is adequate for the hunt of Cape Buffalo with Witkop Safaris However a shot from the various 40 calibers provides a much more immediate and noticeable effect when hunting Buffalo with Witkop Safaris To place your shot from side on follow the center line of the foreleg one third up into the body This will impact the high heart lung area the buffalo will usually rock forward at impact and then turn and run off If placed well he should not go far Never shoot above the halfway mark on his body as unless you are lucky enough to hit the spine you will only anger the beast and might well be in for a long and dangerous follow up For a head on encounter aim dead center in the chest just below the V of his neck If you are faced with a charge the brain shot is the only sure way to stop old Mbogo If he charges with his head raised high the tip of his nose will be a good aim point if he puts his head down so as to strike with his horns as he usually does aim below the boss and about eye level dead center on the forehead With the

poor his hearing is very good and his sense of smell is without equal Over his lifetime he receives 6 sets of molars which move forward in his jaw as previous sets wear down His last set of teeth comes in at about 45 years of age and once these wear out he can only look forward to slow starvation Thus depending on his diet his lifespan is somewhere between 50 and 70 years He is a destructive feeder preferring grass and rather than adapting to his habitat he adapts his habitat to suit his purpose He can consume up to 500 pounds of grass and browse each and every day The Elephant is a very social animal found in small herds made up of cows calves and adolescents Bulls are usually found on their own or in small bachelor herds and only occasionally with a herd of cows Tuskless cows and cows with calves by their sides can be extremely aggressive You hunt Elephant with Witkop Safaris with your feet the stalk can be quite long and cover many miles While Elephant with Witkop Safaris the 375 is the minimum caliber by law there will be no room for error in your shot placement Hunt this big guy with the largest rifle you can shoot well 40 and even 50 caliber rifles with 400 to 500 grain solid bullets should definitely your choice A fifty yard shot might be considered a long shot on the elephant as most are taken at between 20 and 30 yards when hunting Elephant with Witkop Safaris If broadside place your shot just above and slightly forward of the armpit crease of the front leg The frontal chest shot is only possible if Timbo raises his trunk The frontal brain shot can be very

of Southern African His sun sensitive skin keeps him in the water nearly all day and he is usually only found away from the water during his nocturnal grazing sessions His encounters with humans normally occur around sunrise while he is making his way back to water and can often result in a fatality Hunting Hippo can be a very difficult task Normally the Bulls are hunted as trophies and as they spend most of their time in the water identifying the Bulls can at best be difficult The bull s head will be slightly larger than the cow s and he will exhibit two not so prominent humps on either side of his nose where his large lower tusks fit into his upper jaw When hunting Hippo with Witkop Safaris by all means use enough rifle and when hunted in the water as I have described your shot placement must be dead on The triangular indentation just above the eyes is your aim point and a shot placed here will penetrate the brain and anchor this large Water Horse as his name translates From the side aim just below the ear The Hippo will sink beneath the water but float back to the surface within about an hour or so making his recovery possible Use extreme caution here as where you find Hippo you will almost be sure to find the Nile Crocodile whose nasty disposition needs no further elaboration Sight your rifle in dead on your shot must be made with pinpoint accuracy when hunting Hippo with Witkop Safaris The Hippo can also be hunted on the land and make no mistake hunting Hippo with Witkop Safaris in this manner can be extremely exciting A Hippo Bull disturbed on the land or in a small pan can become

regularly if water is available The mature Tom weighs between 120 and 180 pounds with individuals sometimes pushing the 200 mark Females range from 70 to 130 pounds and generally appear more slender in stature Mature animals can consume about 20 percent of their body weight in a single feeding They carry their prey up into the trees to protect it from the larger predators It is amazing to watch them carry prey weighing easily as much as their own weight into the tree tops They feed on virtually all meat sources including scavenged rotten meat Impala is often considered their favorite meal This Cat is strongly territorial and a ruthless killer The Leopard has exceptional eyesight and hearing Give this member of the Big Five the utmost respect if you are forced to track a wounded cat into the bush he is a master of stealth and camouflage and can come for you seemingly from nowhere Life expectancy is about 12 to 15 years The Leopard is most often hunted on bait with Witkop Safaris An Impala hung on a conspicuous branch in good view from a blind makes an excellent ambush for Old Spots Being primarily a nocturnal hunter the Leopard will be extremely difficult to get in position for the shot as in most African countries he must be taken during daylight hours While he could be successfully taken with calibers as light as the 270 or 7 mm in most African countries the 375 remains the lawful minimum caliber When hunting Leopard with Witkop Safaris place your shot midline on the body well behind the shoulder Highly susceptible to hydrostatic shock a shot placed in the center of the chest will often crumple this cat There remains controversy in regard to the weapon of choice for
