  • Travel Diaries: Mauritius: Ilot Mangenie – The Gold Standard
Restaurant where we had a table reserved for an early lunch Since we hadn t made it to breakfast we had worked up an appetite so the baked bread with pickled vegetables coconut chutney and the amazing olive tapenade was a treat To start we ordered the basket of local snacks which consisted of vegetable spring rolls samosas which were divine For mains I ordered the king prawns they so fresh and tasty Tal got the grilled steak which came with broccoli and potato wedges which was good but mine definitely stood out While we were enjoying our food the clouds suddenly cleared we got that picture perfect material blue sky and turquoise sea All of this had to be captured so we spent some time taking photos of each other and the island I went back to the table after awhile and ordered the flambeed banana and mixed ice cream for both of us That was also a hit The homemade ice cream which was vanilla dark chocolate and coconut was some of the best I have ever tasted and was really hard to share After a leisurely dessert we looked and suddenly realized the time it was already 12 40 and we had to be at the spa in 20 minutes We said a quick goodbye and thank you and caught the waiting ferry It seemed the timing was actually rather perfect as on our way back started drizzling We managed to make it to Givenchy spa in time and had the most luxurious aromatherapy massage ever It was such a relaxing hour and either of us wanted it to end It was an incredible day A secluded island with fantastic weather and food all followed by a spa treatment We were truly in paradise Ps To experience

which the super friendly driver filled us in about the vibrant country We arrived at Le Touessrok in the pouring rain Not the Mauritian weather we were expecting Although the first day was cloudy waking up in Le Touessrok was an experience At our first breakfast we oohed and aahed over the vast selection of food and tried just about everything all of which was phenomenal The hotel is modern with Mauritian twists that adds delightful character and we spent the rest of the morning being shown around the hotel by Prithee the Sales Co Ordinator amidst the pouring rain a hilarious experience The hotel boasts 203 rooms including the private villas The afternoon promised a stop to the rain so we spent in on the beach which was a short walk from our room We couldn t resist lounging about on the floating beds in ocean Dinner on the first night was at the Indian restaurant Safran and it was a culinary experience like no other By far the best meal I have ever eaten anywhere in the world The food was exquisite and an absolute delight Tal and I were rather obsessed with the Peshwari naan and still I still crave it Over the next two days we experienced true island living We swam took a trip to Illot Mangenie the hotel s private island I couldn t get enough and there will be more on that soon We also had the most amazing full body massage at the Givenchy spa We also had dinner Barlen s which was on the beach It too was simply incredible offering the best in fine dining and with one of the most spectacular views I have ever seen I really didn t want to leave the little slice of paradise It

  • Travel Diaries: Europe Trip – The Gold Standard
and flew directly to London on British Airways after which I decided no matter how much cheaper other airlines are I will always fly direct when possible it saves so much hassle those 8 hour layovers are just not worth it While waiting to board I met a Capetonian who was also travelling solo and doing a Contiki trip after mine I also met a Canadian who was on her way back home after a year in Cape Town After a rather uneventful flight I landed in Heathrow and ran into the Capetonian again We decided in a bid to miss morning rush hour on the tube to opt for coffee instead and ended up taking a late train into central The second I arrived in the UK I fell in love and I couldn t wait to explore more After I finally managed to find my hotel which was literally a two minute walk from Russell Square station I had gone in the wrong direction for awhile I left my bags in the Contiki basement borrowed a phone charger and then went for a quick Chinese lunch I decided to save the serious sight seeing for when I was back in London after the tour little did I know that would all change and instead went for a walk along the main street where I stumbled upon Tescos and had my first experience with wanting to buy every Lindt Toblerone slab I could It was all ridiculously cheap In the evening we had a group meet up at the local pub where we sat around drinking beers getting to know each other followed by a walk to try and find food and snacks for the start of the trip the next morning A rather interesting feat as no one

doesn t get much better than the gourmet picnic don t expect just the usual bread cheese and meat combinations there was so much more We were given the same basket the farm sells for R350 and serves two it includes ciabatta Mediterranean pesto gazpacho salad with a chilli and garlic dressing grilled beef tagliata with a aioli and truffle oil Richard Bosman s coppa Forest Hill baby grand brie Healey s mature cheddar Loved Ponie s 3 fruit marmalade and the chef s cheesecake To drink we naturally opted for Sauvignon Blanc to pair with the picnic The pickled beetroot pecan nut goat s cheese quinoa and wild rocket salad was my absolute favourite with the proscuitto melon bocconcic and basil skewers not far behind The chef s cheesecake was probably one of the most delicious desserts I have had in awhile and was seriously considering ordering a basket just of that All the dishes were fresh healthy locally sourced and with an option for everyone All in all seriously fantastic After a few relaxing hours in the sun we then decided a wine safari through the Cabernet Sauvignon Cabernet Franc Merlot Pinotage and the Sauvignon Blanc vineyards after
