you re talking to Don t you understand what this living water is that he s talking about Look at verse 11 He s just said If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink you would have asked him and he would have given you living water 11 Sir the woman said you have nothing to draw with and the well is deep Where can you get this living water 12 Are you greater than our father Jacob who gave us the well and drank from it himself as did also his sons and his livestock So I suppose she s asking the right questions Jesus is sitting there empty handed He doesn t have a bucket He doesn t have anything to drop down into the well to get water I mean she s basically saying to him You re there with nothing to draw water with The well is deep You must be amazing She s basically saying you d have to be greater than our ancestor Jacob who gave us the well and drank from it himself So I think she s starting to catch on at this point 13 Jesus answered Everyone who drinks this water will be thirsty again 14 but whoever drinks the water I give them will never thirst Indeed the water I give them will become in them a spring of water welling up to eternal life It s around about noon It was probably getting quite hot They would have been getting quite thirsty So the thought of a spring of eternal water at this point would have been a very attractive on 15 The woman said to him Sir give me this water so that I won t get thirsty and have to keep coming here to draw water So she knows she needs it And she wants it But I don t think she s fully understood it But I don t think we understand fully what it s like not to have access to running water Such an essential thing in our lives yet we literally have it on tap And we hardly pay anything for it So it s very accessible to us But imagine what it would be like if we did have water restrictions Imagine what it would be like if we did have a water shortage I know they say that there is watershedding looming But even if that happened we would have more access than they had 2000 years ago On a hot day you couldn t just help yourself to water whenever you wanted to Imagine having to go to a place to fetch water as opposed to just turning on a tap every time Imagine being in that situation and then someone comes to you and offers you an eternal supply of water I think you would want that Water was a luxury back in that day But here s what Jesus is doing here He s using the analogy of water to illustrate what he has to offer He s using the analogy of water to show us that we have a thirst that needs to be quenched And it s not just a thirst that comes from a dry mouth Or the thirst that comes from a hot day or a thirst that comes as a result of walking along the beach or running a 10k or spending half an hour on the treadmill It s an inner thirst that represents a need in all of us A need that can only be satisfied a thirst that can only be quenched by God himself What Jesus is offering us is what we were created for Jesus is offering eternal life The type of water that Jesus is offering is something that is needed by every human being Your boss at work that uncle of yours who you re going to be braaing with this afternoon that person who sits next to you in class and gives you a hard time That man who scratches in your bin when you put it out on a Wednesday or a Thursday morning YOU and me We all need Jesus We all need eternal life And not only is Jesus offering eternal life here but he is claiming exclusive distribution rights In other words what he is offering no one else can offer This water that Jesus is offering cannot be obtained from anyone else Or from anywhere else Why Because he is God Look again at verse 10 If you knew the gift of God and who it is that asks you for a drink you would have asked him and he would have given you living water When Jesus stands before you and offers you living water and offers you eternal life it is the God of the universe standing before you and offering you eternal life Offering you living water There is nothing greater than the offer that God offers you this morning Eternal life Living water It s there for the taking because God himself offers it to us Jesus offers eternal life God himself offers eternal life The next thing that I see about Jesus here in this passage is that even though he knows everything about us he still offers us eternal life So the woman says to Jesus that she wants this water and then Jesus asks her to do something Look at verse 16 16 He told her Go call your husband and come back To which she replies in verse 17 17 I have no husband And then Jesus proceeds to tell her about herself Look in verse 17 and 18 Jesus said to her You are right when you say you have no husband 18 The fact is you have had five husbands and the man you now have is not your husband What you have just said is quite true Many of us

all a preamble to the verses that I really want us to focus on this morning to get to know Jesus better Verses 31 35 Vs 31 To the Jews who had believed him Jesus said If you hold to my teaching you are really my disciples 32 Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free 33 They answered him We are Abraham s descendants and have never been slaves of anyone How can you say that we shall be set free 34 Jesus replied I tell you the truth everyone who sins is a slave to sin 35 Now a slave has no permanent place in the family but a son belongs to it for ever So what does this passage tell me that will help me get to know Jesus better What can I get out of this window into the life of Jesus that will help me get to know Jesus better Help me get to know him more personally There are 2 concepts here that Jesus talks about They are concepts that are directly related to Jesus They are 2 concepts or 2 ideas that every human being in the world longs for And it s only in Jesus that those 2 can be found and experienced Look at verse 31 and 32 31 To the Jews who had believed him Jesus said If you hold to my teaching you are really my disciples 32 Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free The two concepts are truth and freedom You see Jesus is getting really bold here and he is saying that if you don t believe in him If you don t hold to his teaching then you don t know the truth and you re not truly free You don t have truth and you don t have freedom But if you hold to my teaching you are really my disciples Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free Truth and freedom So what is Jesus saying about truth Jesus is saying here that truth is found in following him and obeying him In holding to his teaching The quest for truth nowadays is a big deal And in the era that we are living in it s very politically incorrect to say that you have a handle on the truth or to say that your truth is the right truth So everything has become relative We live in an age of tolerance Where you believe what you want to believe and I ll believe what I want to believe In fact this whole issue of tolerance and believe what you want to believe isn t such a new thing anymore In 1983 a famous actress wrote a book about her experiences and especially her spiritual experiences And she had a spiritual guide And in this book she asks him if he believes in reincarnation And he replies It s true if you believe it and that goes for anything Some search for truth through science Some search for truth by using more of a mystical means They go on some quest in the mountains or they try some mystical eastern religion to try and find themselves and to try and find the truth In this particular passage the Pharisees are using legal means to try and find the truth They re accusing Jesus of biasedly being his own witness And their problem was they didn t have access to all the evidence Jesus is telling them here that the truth is found in a relationship In fact the truth is found in a person and that person is Jesus So how do you find the truth then You believe in Jesus and you hold to his teachings In other words you trust him You do what he says You listen to the one who is saving your life Imagine you re in an accident and you feel like this could be it and a paramedic arrives on the scene And so they start giving you instructions They doing their utmost to get you to stay awake So what do you start doing at this point Do you start arguing with paramedic and saying but wait a second Someone posted on Facebook the other day that if you re ever in an accident then it s better for me to do this than what you re telling me No of course you don t You do exactly what this paramedic tells you to do if you want to stay alive You listen to the one who is there to save your life It s like that with Jesus We are dying We need help We can t save ourselves Jesus has come to rescue us We hold to his teaching We put our trust in him We do what the one who is saving our lives is telling us what to do When Jesus talks about truth here he s not just talking about accepting intellectually that something could be true He s talking about accepting it believing it and obeying it A bit later on in the book of John Jesus says to his disciples If you love me you ll obey my commands Have you done that Have you put your faith in Jesus Have you accepted the truth in such a way that it s not just something you ve accepted intellectually You win every time you debate about it But your life shows no evidence If that s the case you ve got to wonder if you re really a believer in the truth Well if you re really a believer in the truth the truth will set you free In other words you ll find true freedom Now when Jesus made that comment to those whom we are told had just put their faith in him They were a bit confused Look at

you there is rejoicing in the presence of the angels of God over one sinner who repents And then the same thing is hinted at when Jesus ends off the parable of the lost son in 15 32 we had to celebrate and be glad because this brother of yours was dead and is alive again he was lost and is found And remember that these parables were told to the leaders of Israel who were still thinking like Jonah had thought 15 1 2 Now the tax collectors and sinners were all gathering around to hear him But the Pharisees and the teachers of the law muttered This man welcomes sinners and eats with them Imagine a scale Slide Unpack where would you put yourself on the scale So I don t know where you would have put yourself but I imagine that many of us do feel that we have a concern for the lost So to help clarify answer this question What are you doing about the lost Now don t think about all the excuses for not doing something Jonah also had all his excuses simply ask yourself What am I doing We might want to look down on Jonah for being so heartless for not wanting the Ninevites to be saved For being more passionate about his own personal comfort than the salvation of others But how different are we really If we are not actively doing something to express our concern for the lost we are no better than Jonah So Let me give you some worthwhile actions to express a concern for the lost Or at least to start developing a concern And let s just be clear God wants us to have a concern for the lost like Him It s the reason Jonah is in our Bibles It s one of the main reasons we have a Bible It s the reason Jesus our Lord came to earth The great commission He left us His vision for us is all about that and should govern our lives So here are some worthwhile actions Let s constantly remind ourselves of the salvation we have in Christ And as we do that let s pray that God will stir up in us a passion for others to experience that same salvation Jonah understood that salvation 2 8 9 and yet it didn t move him to want that for others We don t want to be like Jonah Let s pray for people that we know who are not Christians yet that God would save them Pray regularly and specifically for individuals we know Let s support gospel opportunities at St Matthews God creates these opportunities at your church specifically that you can use them for the salvation of the lost Support them by attending them and inviting someone to attend with you Because our preaching at St Matthews is so Christ centred you could invite them to any given Sunday But there
