Isaac who was effectively blind was cheated by Jacob and that changed the course of Biblical history When Samson had his eyes gouged out by the Philistines and he became blind When God struck a troop of Syrians with blindness so that Elisha could lead them away from their plans to attack God s people and into Samaria Jesus also dealt with and healed quite a few blind people like Blind Bartimaeus the beggar as we saw last week The apostle Paul went temporarily blind when he was confronted by the Lord on the Road to Damascus And of course as we will see spiritual blindness which is all over the Bible after the fall of Genesis 3 Spiritual blindness in the Bible is the inability to recognise the truth or in some cases a refusal to listen to the truth That is what Samson s blindness was an image of That is what Paul s temporary blindness was an image of Spiritual blindness is a spiritually congenital condition for all humans that only God can miraculously cure And that is what Christ does when he comes to earth He heals the spiritually blind usually by drawing attention to the healing of spiritual blindness with the healing of physical blindness Helping spiritually blind people see is one of the descriptions given by Jesus when He sums up what God the Father had sent Him to do on earth Luke 4 18 21 Healing the physically blind is one of the most vivid images of Jesus supernatural ability to heal the spiritually blind if He can do the one surely He can do the other In something of a twist for the people of His time Jesus described the spiritual leaders and teachers of His day in the gospel of Matthew as blind guides blind men and blind Pharisees Ironically and this proves the point they thought that spiritually they had perfect vision But to those who wanted to see who were willing to go to Jesus for sight Look at how Jesus heals the spiritually blind Matthew 13 16 17 Look at how the healing of the physically blind goes hand in hand with the healing of the spiritually blind John 9 1 7 mention rest 35 39 And if anyone did not respond to Jesus as they ought to the judgement further permanent blindness is the result John 12 37 40 Do you see Who Jesus is What He came to do How it is all relevant and applicable to you If you do praise God that He miraculously opened your spiritually blind eyes to see the truth Because if he hadn t you may have stayed spiritually blind for the rest of your life and completely ignorant of just how terrible that is for you in this world and eternity If you still don t see it we will pray for God to perform a miracle of healing for your spiritually blind eyes You are in a desperate

the judgement of godless society is envisaged one of the terrible images given is that there will be no joy and listen to how it is expressed in Revelation 18 21 The voice of bridegroom and bride will never be heard in you again There are some actual weddings recorded in the Bible but those accounts are quite short There is a lot more emphasis placed on groom bride and weddings being images for something greater The rich romantic language of the bride and groom in Song of Songs is actually imagery of the amazing joyful relationship between God and His people between Christ and the Church Paul picks up that theme directly in the NT in Ephesians 5 22 33 Perhaps one of the most shocking examples of this is in the book of Hosea God gets the prophet Hosea to take a prostitute as his wife Because His people instead of showing Him love and faithfulness were prostituting themselves to other gods and religions And of course when Hosea wife is unloving and unfaithful to him that is told to the people to be an image of their behaviour And the pain that Hosea experiences is explained to be what God feels about what His people are doing Of course what is even more shocking is that Hosea is told by God to go and fetch his wife from where she is prostituting herself and take her in with him love her again all symbolic of the fact that God would take His people back again and love them as much as He had before ultimately this would happen through Jesus And so Peter quotes from Hosea when he writes in 1 Peter 2 9 10 Do you remember this well used passage of the Bible in John 14 1 4 This is the diligent loving bridegroom going to make preparations for the shared room with the one He loves you Not now a sexual thing but still one of joyful love And then there is the final image The one to which all others are leading The image of the final great wedding feast and celebration in heaven When the Bridegroom Christ is united with His beloved bride the Church forever Revelation 19 6 9 The wedding of the Lamb The bride makes herself ready clothed in fine linen bright and clean pure The invitation is issued for the wedding supper And then as you read further in chapter 19 the magnificent processional with the triumphant hosts tramples everything in its path standing against them And then going into chapter 20 21 the gathering for the marriage supper involves elaborate preparations The new home is to be the new Jerusalem in which the glory of God gives light making lamps and oil unnecessary No night No darkness No sin And as the guests begin to arrive none are admitted except those whose names are written in the Lamb s book of life And then in to chapter
