  • Discipline - by Colin Retief
be more like Jesus The writer to the Hebrews gives us 2 positive lessons here that we can learn from pain 2 positive lessons we can learn when going through hard times The first lesson is that when we re going through hard times it s evidence of Sonship And we see that in verses 5 to 9 which includes a quote from Proverbs 5 and you have forgotten that word of encouragement that addresses you as sons and here s the quote from Proverbs 3 My son do not make light of the Lord s discipline and do not lose heart when he rebukes you 6 because the Lord disciplines those whom he loves and he punishes everyone he accepts as a son 7 now we re back to the Hebrews writer Endure hardship as discipline God is treating you as his sons For what son is not disciplined by his father If you are not disciplined and everyone undergoes discipline then you are illegitimate children and not true sons 9 Moreover we have all had human fathers who disciplined us and we respected them for it How much more should we submit to the Father of our spirits and live I think Adam was somewhere between 1 and 2 years old when he was playing outside and we saw that somehow he had gotten hold of 2 of our steak knives What made the situation quite urgent was that he was on the trampoline at the time Now do you think we would have had his best interests at heart if we had just let him continue He would have had fun It may have ended badly Of course not We had to take the steak knives away from him and we had to teach him that steak knives are great for cutting steak but not good for playing with on the trampoline Of course a 3 year old isn t going to understand that it s bad We re just taking his fun toys away But if we talk to him about it now when he s 7 he ll understand that that wasn t a good idea That s often how it is with God We don t see the point in what God has got planned for us We sometimes see God as taking away our fun taking away our pleasure and life is more painful But actually he has our best interests at heart And he does it because he cares for us He cares for us because we are his sons You need to see hardship and struggle as a good thing You need to see it as God s loving discipline God is allowing you to go through it because he cares for you as a child of his And the next lesson we learn is in verse 10 and 11 Our fathers disciplined us for a little while as they thought best but God disciplines us for our good that we
