  • Part 2 - by Colin Retief
But when Jesus tells them to do it They catch so many fish their nets start to break But when all of this happens Peter falls on his knees and says Go away from me Lord I am a sinful man When you re looking for someone to lead spiritually A church leader A home group leader A youth leader A kids church leader A Contagious worship leader A service leader A Council member This is an important quality to look for It is essential They recognize Who Jesus is And they recognize who they are Sinners Who are unworthy to stand in his presence Peter recognized this He didn t always get exactly what was going and where things were headed But he recognized that he was a sinner and was unworthy to be in the presence of Jesus the almighty God Luke 22 vs 32 is another place where Jesus shows his intentions for Peter to be a Spiritual leader They re at the last supper Jesus is telling them what is to come And he specifically addresses Simon And I have prayed for you Simon that your faith may not fail And when you have turned your back strengthen your brothers In other words there is a key role for you to play Peter You re going to turn your back But after that strengthen your brothers So throughout act 1 we get to introduced to this character Peter Who plays a major role in God s plan He plays a leadership role in God s plan He also wasn t perfect That s a mistake we can often make about these people that God uses They were flawless God chose them because they had so much to offer in terms of Gifts Abilities And Peter did have certain abilities and gifts and God used them But wasn t without flaws He wasn t someone who never made mistakes He wasn t someone who never suffered from anxiety Peter had his share of struggles Some Bible scholars have described Peter as the disciple with the foot shaped mouth He said things impetuously without thinking He just said things as he thought them He rebuked Jesus Who rebukes Jesus Who Tells Jesus that he s wrong Especially just after he s recognized that Jesus is the Messiah The one who s come to save them Jesus quickly rebukes him back And throughout the gospels you see him making a few uneccessary comments that you could clearly see that he didn t really think them through He was a guy who had doubts So that time when he rebuked Jesus He didn t believe what Jesus was saying about what was going to happen Jesus had just explained to them that he s going to suffer He had explained to them that he s going be killed He had explained to them that he s going to be raised to life Peter takes Jesus aside and says Never Lord This shall never happen to you And as I said earlier Jesus rebukes him He also showed doubt when Jesus walked on water After Jesus had told them it was him Peter still questioned Lord if it s you tell me to come to you So Peter started walking on the water but then he started sinking And he cries Lord save me And Jesus says to him You of Little faith Why did you doubt He was also someone who must have a quick temper who made rash decisions When the soldiers come to arrest Jesus in the garden of Gethsemane Peter does something very impulsive He immediately takes a sword and cuts off the ear of the servant of the high priest He obviously wasn t thinking clearly I m not sure if Peter was ever tried for that Apparently when you cut off someone s ear there s no hearing Peter also had some weak moments The most famous of which is his denial of knowing Jesus In fact this was a bad day for Peter He had just cut off the servants ear Jesus had been arrested Was on trial Probably being beaten and whipped at this point And Peter is waiting outside and is asked 3 times if he knows Jesus And all 3 times he denies it And after a 3 rd time the cock begins to crow So this is the Peter we meet in Act 1 Don t worry Acts 2 and 3 will hopefully go a lot quicker But Act 1 we get introduced to Peter A bit rough around the edges He shoots his mouth off a bit every now and then He takes on this leadership role among the disciples He recognizes who Jesus is He has this great relationship with Jesus But he also has issues Act 2 takes place in this passage that I read earlier and what happens in Act 2 is life changing for Peter It s like a recommissioning And if you put yourself in Peter s shoes you would think that it s over He denied Jesus the night he was killed The man whom he had spent the last 3 years with The man whose cause he had been willing to give up his life for And he had denied him Imagine how he must have been feeling In verse 3 Simon Peter says I m going to fish He s basically saying I m giving up on this whole mission I m obviously not cut out for this I ve let Jesus down I m no good at this Let me go back to fishing Now in the previous chapter Jesus had already appeared to the disciples after his death Jesus commissioned them to go out Peter would have known that he was forgiven for denying Christ But he s not feeling good about all of this He just wants to throw in the towel So He says I m going
