  • Experiencing God's Love - by Mike Emslie
dimensional Very individualistic Which has its place but not as much as we might think Let me show you what I mean Some time ago we studied 1 John which is a letter written to show us what authentic Christianity looks like What John does is give a series of tests we can use to evaluate if we are truly authentic Christians One of the tests is the love test But it is somewhat of a surprising love test Firstly our love for God And look what our love for God is inextricably linked to 1 John 4 20 21 Unpack Context 7 8 Now that is our love for God but the same thing applies in experiencing God s love for us 1 John 4 9 12 Unpack God s love for us cannot start to be understood apart from understanding our sin and the salvation he provides in Christ 9 10 But then look where John goes from 11 In other words when God loves Jack and Jack loves Gill in the way God wants him to Gill also experiences God s love This motivated one commentator to say So do not be surprised on Sunday morning if worshiping God makes you want to hug the neck of your neighbor That is just proof that your love for God is the real thing Your handshake in the lobby is no less spiritual than lifting that hand in praise Actually if you try too hard to separate them you might be liar So here is what I want us to reflect and then act on this morning The way we experience God love is Firstly to trust only in the sacrifice that Christ made on the cross for our salvation And actually every time we remind ourselves of that we remind ourselves how much God loves us And then by all means read your Bible and pray and walk around in creation marvelling at God But the second way that John would encourage you to rely on to experience God s love is to plunge yourself into relationships with other Christians Christians whom you will love so that they can experience God s love Whether you like those Christians or not Whether they are your age or not Whether their education is to your liking or not Whether their hobbies interest you or not Whether their skin colour is the same as yours or not Whether their culture is the same as yours or not Whether they have annoying habits or not Whether they have the same sins as you or not And if everyone loves others like that then everyone will experience God loving them in the process It is worth mentioning that love is not a soppy thing and sometimes people won t like what the Bible calls love but love always wants what is biblically best for others and if we do that in the end everyone will experience God s love So how will you

  • We can move mountains - by Mike Emslie
little as small as a mustard seed a tiny amount they would have cast out the demon and healed the boy If As followers of Jesus The same followers who in Matthew 10 had been sent out with the authority of Jesus to do this very sort of thing The same followers who had seen the one who had given them authority perform so many miracles If they had just exercised a little bit of faith forsaking all doubt I trust Him the boy would have been healed In fact Jesus says if they had exercised just a tiny little bit of mustard seed faith they could move the mountain they could see he might have said pointing at the mountain they had just come down Now no one in his right mind would want to go around moving mountains nowhere does Jesus include that in what ministry should be But the point is that if they had trusted in Jesus Nothing will be impossible for you That is nothing of what Jesus has said they should be doing would be impossible Actually moving mountains was a Hebrew proverbial image for resolving great problems And if they had had just a little bit of faith they could have done the impossible that Jesus had given them authority to do Clearly there are times when whether we have faith or not will determine whether God works or not What does this mean for us Well clearly our lack of faith disappoints Him When we don t trust Him as we ought to it disappoints Him Also if we don t have faith we will not see God work in and through us as when we do have faith That is not a charismatic thing it is a bible thing If we have faith even a little bit and we take steps of faith to do what God has called us to do we will be amazed at what God will do in and through us I think a lot of us have boring Christian lives because we don t have the faith to step out into the adventure of what God has called us to do God has called us to obey His Word in our everyday life If we step out of all our concerns about what people will say and do and we exercise just a little bit of faith in the truth that His way is always best if we take the step of faith to simply obey Him and then trust Him with whatever the consequences will be we will begin to see God working in amazing ways in and through us God has called us to serve in the local church If we step out of our desire to preserve our independence and look after ourselves and how our time is spent and exercise just a little bit of faith that God has dibs on our time and effort more than we do ourselves and for
