  • How do we work - by Mike Emslie
a social conscience 22 16 28 8 Deuteronomy 25 35 38 said that God s people should help the poor freely and not for gain and if not God will eventually make sure that money is taken away and through someone else get to the poor And then on relating to each other in the work place with integrity and honesty obviously true in other situations too and that is the point be a Christian at work Don t be conceited and self seeking 25 6 7 Be humble 27 2 Have your superior s back in all ways 27 18 Don t be a slanderer or poke your nose into areas you shouldn t 30 10 The NT picks up these same themes in encouraging Christians on how to work And here the focus is also on faithfulness but at the heart of it lies faithfulness to Christ first and foremost with everything else flowing out of that Ephesians 4 28 work to work hard feel fatigue Complete turnaround of motivation 6 5 9 If all the things I have said seem so much to remember then remember this In your work place whatever you do do it as though you were doing it for Christ all of it wwjwmtd And I know most people want to keep faith to church gatherings and not work but God says it doesn t work that way when you serve Him in all of your life And that is the way of freedom eternal purpose and peace I reckon if we put Him to the test on this we will experience that eventually It may be hard very hard to get going but it is His way and if we are not wanting to go that way then why call ourselves children of God 1 Thessalonians 4 11 12 last week 1 Timothy 6 1 2 Titus 2 9 10 last week And so on hearing this perspective on work the CEO of a company said to his pastor I have been living my life so far according the motto Seek to be successful at work and faithful as a Christian Are you saying that instead I should seek to be successful as a Christian and faithful at work And you know in a way he is right Christs call on us is to be disciple making disciples work is there to provide for our basic needs and leave us free to do that it is of course another context in which to be a disciple making disciple it must be God wouldn t allow us to spend so much time at it and not have it as part of our calling just the few hours left after work and whatever keeps us from that focus be successful at that and faithful at work so that it doesn t take away from your witness as a disciple making disciple Seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness As I said last

s triangle not really the higher ones There is great wisdom in this If work or career is about all the things at the top then my identity is bound up in it If my identity is bound up in my career then when my career fails I have failed I am a failure But if my job is about serving others and putting food on the table then when my job fails I don t fail and I can go and find something else to do that will help me serve others and put food on the table And in God s wisdom we Christians learn that our work should never be the source of our identity Our identity is always found being in Christ 2 Corinthians 5 17 And with this in minds Paul also says this in 1 Thessalonians 4 11 12 That is a far cry from seeking approval and accolades from others and trying to be the best whatever in our careers Even the Proverbs 31 wife is not about being a super woman who can keep up with the best of her male colleagues Nor is she trying to find herself in her work She is all about providing food clothing and safety for her family and for the needy Actually nowhere in the Bible will you find the idea of a career all we need to do is work Did you know that career is also a verb in the dictionary The car went careering down the mountain and over the cliff The desire for excellence in our careers can lead many a Christian to career off track and make a mess of their Christian lives Moreover even the slave which is hardly a high status job can adorn the gospel through the integrity of how he works Titus 2 9 10 Very often rhetoric about needing to excel in my field in order to glorify God and draw people into the kingdom is a Christian attempt to sanctify careerism The world as usual tends to turn everything upside down and so here is something to reflect on from a biblical perspective the guy who collects the rubbish bins from our homes almost certainly does more for the health of our community than the cosmetic plastic surgeon I wonder if we as Christians have unthinkingly adopted worldly thinking because it benefits our materialistic prosperity gospel way of thinking We have become to settled in this world and it s thinking and not taken to heart God description of us in 1 Peter 2 10 12 We must be clear in our thinking we must think biblically when it comes to what work is all about for these few short years we have on earth Clearly God may as we go about our work choose to bless it beyond what we expect and give us the kind of wealth that we really don t deserve But I am not sure it is biblical to
