n manier by Mutt Mon Jul 21 2014 12 04 pm Dextrin is probably the easiest and cheapest binder Spread an even layer of Mazena on a baking tray and cook it in a very hot oven until it goes brown and you have it Gum Arabic it also used apparently easiest place to get that is at a baker s supply My wife uses it to make cake decorations the pure product is a bit expensive I came across this Forum s loooong thread a while back and it might give you a few tips http castboolits gunloads com showthr ack powder Keep in mind making your own in S A is illegal I post this link for your information only Mutt Posts 219 Joined Fri Mar 09 2012 2 37 pm Top Re Roll your own nog n manier by Spitfire Mon Jul 21 2014 7 07 pm Mutt as responsible and law abiding gun owners I think most of us just like to know how to make it nothing wrong with collecting info Spitfire Posts 2004 Joined Fri Mar 02 2012 10 25 pm Top Re Roll your own nog n manier by Gunsports Wed Jul 23 2014 9 06 am I discussed pelletising black powder with one of the explosives guys SAP He thinks that by adding dextrin or any sugar for that matter will alter the chemical composition of the powder sugar is fuel and WILL affect the burning rate and as such you are then in effect making a modified black powder which is illegal and dangerous pressure spike etc Gum arabic thanks for the pointer Mutt is the ideal Next to that a non volatile substance that can act as binder without affecting the powder s burning rate here I was thinking along the lines of a paper glue alcohol and toilet paper paste which will contain cellulose which if any would REDUCE the burning rate Still have to test but will look into gun arabic because it can be used to make the cap substitute as well Knowledge is power Knowing not to make the stuff is common sense If it ain t a ball it ain t a bullet Gunsports Posts 1175 Joined Fri Mar 02 2012 10 10 am Location Oudtshoorn RSA Website Top Re Roll your own nog n manier by Mutt Wed Jul 23 2014 9 56 am The perfect fuel for BP must be 70 carbon sugar will add to that but dextrin won t Glen check out that link I posted it is a long but very interesting read took me two nights especially if you go to the links posted on that thread Gum Arabic can be substituted from the ordinary thorn trees in our veld Any wound on the tree will ooze gum When collected and boiled with minimum water skimmed and cleaned up it is edible so it should work fine Printers use Gum arabic but unfortunately is is sold in liquid form

than ash residue Looking at the Ponal wood glue that I used Its material data sheet states that this stuff comprises of PVA Polyvinyl acetate which is listed as non combustible So I doubt if the addition of the glue would have altered the burn characteristics of the powder in any way It is also non toxic except for fish Although a synthetic polymer so little was used in the making of the pellet I doubt if it will leave any fouling other than trace in the barrel of a gun and I doubt if this will cause the dreaded plastic fouling like sabots do On the other hand one will only see this through actual testing The speed of ignition bothers me a little Then again I have no idea how fast powder burns when in a column like in a barrel I think the hole down the middle of the pellet must have contributed to the combustion speed as this would have presented a larger surface for ignition I applied the flame to the back of the pellet I must be frank At this stage I will NOT test this in any gun However I will ask my friend with the super Instamatic if he will conduct some tests for me I will give him three loads One a pellet with the hole in the second a solid pellet and the third the same weight of powder wrapped in a paper Rizzla cartridge At a million frames per second one will probably see any differences If not too hectic I will then test in the Ruger BTW The hole in the middle will only have an effect in in line type ignition systems Testing continues NOW HEAR THIS THIS INFORMATION IS FOR ACADEMIC STUDY PURPOSES ONLY DO NOT TRY THIS AT HOME FOLKS If it ain t a ball it ain t a bullet Gunsports Posts 1175 Joined Fri Mar 02 2012 10 10 am Location Oudtshoorn RSA Website Top Re Roll your own nog n manier by Spitfire Wed Aug 06 2014 8 46 pm You might want to test the same weight loose in a heap as well Spitfire Posts 2004 Joined Fri Mar 02 2012 10 25 pm Top Re Roll your own nog n manier by Mutt Wed Aug 06 2014 10 08 pm Gunsports I personally doubt that there is any danger in using your pellets as they are I have made several loading mistakes with my inline and always remove the breech plug and push the load out from the muzzle Everytime the powder does not come out the barrel as loose powder but is pushed out as a solid pellet albeit a crumbly one This was true with Sannadex Buschalk and BP In affect the tamping of the load is making a sort of pellet in the barrel anyway In every positive ignition the burn of the powder is in micro seconds I would be very surprised in the little hole
