of your immediate needs so you may have to consult your doctor to provide you with a one off script for a two month supply Ask nicely and if you explain the reason why I am sure he ll understand and oblige Unless off course you are somewhat of a nutty persuasion with the risk of over dosing But then a month s supply normal script is usually enough to OD on if you re that way inclined How you are going to get past your medical aid in terms of payments etc I leave up to your ingenuity Once you have your two month s supply then you continue as before rotating the medicines as you go along Another fact that one should work towards is first aid training for the whole family Courses are usually presented by the Red Cross or some of the private ambulance services Even in a non grid down situation first aid training can be literally a life saver The ideal would be a level three first aid course and it is not that difficult or expensive to obtain With it a very good first aid kit Your course will usually describe these kits and it would be good economics to make up a kit of your own and not to buy a ready packaged kit These are very expensive for the good ones One last thing For those of us of the four eyes persuasion get a set of spare glasses It need not be fancy just serviceable I know of a lot of people who buy the ready made glasses at Clicks etc and where eyes need different strengths they buy two of the same style but of the different strengths necessary for their eyes and then swop out Still way cheaper

assure you the prices will go up Next to fail will be communication Our cell phone batteries will go down before the networks crash Land lines may remain functional but being government are you willing to place bets In addition employers will send their workers home without pay so next week s wages or next month s salary is in doubt Schools will close sending thousands millions of bored kids out onto the streets Now Eskom has admitted that should the grid go down it would take at least three weeks for the grid to start up again if we re lucky Most probably it will take longer So if the worst happens we are in smelly street for at least a month longer because then systems must get up and running again Work on at least two months Now let s throw a spanner into the works Should a grid down situation occur there will be people who will use this to their own advantage Protest marches will happen and as we are so used to by now the criminal element will be there Now imaging a bunch of bored angry hungry broke and out of work people mass deciding to march on the mayor s parlor to protest their misfortune Do you think anything will be left standing in their wake Especially if there are leaders telling them it is someone s fault Nothing described here is new It happens daily Call it xenophobic attacks it does not happen or service delivery protests does not happen either and look what happens during these events Look at when people decide that you have done something to affront them They will come and burn your place down in anger off course looting it first in retribution News No it is happening daily Imagine now when people are really pissed And when those dependant on government hand outs realize that their bank cards don t work and the money s not in their accounts Nou is ek besig om myself bang te praat As regards food and nutrition plan to have sufficient supplies for at least one to two months These supplies are to include everything you use to survive on a day to day basis Everything Now for those with generating capacity to last one or two months without re supply the situation is simple Stock up now and eat normally For the rest of us not so fortunate here is what I did Long ago I stopped eating processed foods I went over to whole foods stuff like rice dried peas lentils and pasta I researched the internet for information on whole foods that would provide me with all the nutrients that I need to survive and flourish without the need for refrigeration My veggies are mostly fresh and when not canned I am looking at freeze dried but this avenue is still too expensive Whole foods are mostly bland foods so I use a lot of natural spices

found that you could do about all on the little 2 plate that I did on the big stove Off course being single back then helped That little 2 plate went with me all over till I pulled the trigger and bought another gas stove I run my stove off a 9 kilo gas cylinder and I use the stove often Yet I still manage to get almost a year s worth of cooking out of a single cylinder In a grid down situation when the gas stove will become my primary source of heat generation I will use more gas But for that I can always fall back on the two 19 kilo cylinders that I have in the shop for running the bluing tanks By my estimates I will be good for gas for about a year I have an additional 4 5 kilo cylinder that I use for my panel gas heater This cylinder can also double as a backup to the stove or more typically run the gas lantern that I have for it This is an excellent source of bright light more than adequate for reading In addition I have two of the old Coleman kerosene lanterns Still American made these old units are ultra reliable and provide light equal to that of the gas lantern Kerosene paraffin is reasonably cheap and I have 10 liters in storage planning on increasing this to 20 liters This should be sufficient for high intensity light for about a year However I restrict my gas and Coleman lights for reading only as the lower illumination from my wax lanterns tend to cause eye strain For general lighting I make my own wax lanterns I use cheap store bought candles as a base but use wicks from those cheap Chinese lanterns on sale at the supermarkets For containers I use old canning flasks empty jam bottles whatever I can lay my hands on provided they have a wide stable base Now a little planning is needed I fill the jar to about a third with molten candle wax and have the wick planted so it protrudes about 15mm above the wax when set Now you have an effective and stable lantern that provides more than adequate general lighting Because no wax is wasted it lasts almost indefinitely and above all it is cheap to make and safe to use If you want to be fancy add some citronella oil for a mosquito repellant or some fragrant oil to mask the paraffin smell I ll post some pictures of how they re made For personal warmth I can fall back onto my gas panel heater although it uses a lot of gas But then I ve found that an extra blanket on the bed or worn like a Basutu looks weird but works just as well You will note that throughout I have tried to make do either with what I have or what will work effectively at a minimal

bet on grid collapse within the next year before I would hope for Zuma to resign So this time I AM preparing for that eventuality So what is grid collapse and what is its effect Easy try for yourself Switch of the main power switch and turn off the water supply to your property and keep it off for two days just as a start Now if the kids have not burned the place down left home or the missus has slit your throat then thank the stars You ve survived for now But not only the power and the water In this 24 hours you may not use a credit debit card You may not draw cash from an ATM You may not put in petrol and you may not buy any prepared or raw foods from a supermarket cafe Steak houses and takeaways are verboten You see in a grid down condition all of these essentials will cease to function Oh and you cannot go to work either The boss has shut down the business factory and you will not be paid for the time away from work Traffic will be chaos water supply will cease to be and for the cherry on the top the agtergeblewenes will come a visiting Interesting no I actually did it back in 2008 Without warning I shut the water to my place and also tripped the main switch I made do with the petrol I had in the car s and I used what I had in the house Off course I had the benefit of knowing it was only a game and I could toss the towel at any time But I persisted and let me tell you this It was a terrible time Water was the first crisis I had what water that was in the geyser and this I decanted into just about every container I had It tasted horrible but with boiling it was palatable Fortunately I have been cooking with gas for decades now so I had power for cooking and heat sterilisation But what got me was the toilet I could go outside and water a tree for the standing stuff but for the sitting I had to flush with water the little that I had Found that an old tin of Jays fluid kept the smell at bay for a while but then I had to use my precious water I was ok for food The fridge kept stuff reasonably fresh for 48 hours and the deep freeze kept stuff frozen even after 48 hours Lights were by way of candles and some Coleman kerosene lanterns Off course the spare gas cylinder was empty one of those get to it scenario s Also I had some tinned stuff to tide me over Milk went bad though on the second day Beers were warm and drinking this gave me the runs TV was out of the question I still had TV back then when I
