  • helen brain - 24/100 Cat Hellisen When the Sea is Rising Red
it sells internationally She writes fantasy with unicorns sea creatures and a society driven by magic The setting though is very familiar and that gives the writing a solid base I think it s important when you write fantasy to have one element that is very familiar to the reader or too much of their attention goes into negotiating the new information What I remember about the book two weeks later is not the characters and their dilemmas but the atmosphere and the setting The world she created is so evocative It s hard to do this well and she s done a great job on it It feels like I could drive down to Scarborough or Misty Cliffs on a wintery day and see the drowned girl rising out of the sea and hear the clop clop of the unicorns drawing a carriage along the streets of Kommetjie What I didn t like so much about When the Sea is Rising Red is that she spends too much time describing the fantasy world in the beginning The really successful fantasy dystopian novels like Hunger Games and Divergent plunge the reader straight into the world as though it s perfectly

huge danger because her extraordinary powers are very desirable to the dark magick forces Tiernan combines romance with the supernatural journey in a beguiling way and I am sure this series was a huge hit with the younger end of Young Adult I loved the first book in this series and the second and third But I became increasingly irritated by the way the books were designed At the start

  • helen brain - 15/100 The Escape by Robert Muchamore
and has to get vital documents to England He s killed in a bombing raid and the Germans are after the kids There s lots of killing but Muchamore doesn t focus on it unnecessarily He s just showing war like it is without glossing over the horrible bits In terms of plot and pace this book was unbeatable I liked the relaxed conversational style and the way he worked
