  • helen brain - Saving Water
which is due at the publisher on May 1 It s set in Cape Town after a major calamity that sees the polar icecaps melted through nuclear war and 99 99 of the world s population has been wiped out Sea levels have risen 83 m turning the Cape Peninsula into three islands and a cabal who worship the god Prospiroh have taken power They believe that the poor and sick are being punished by Prospiroh and that expelling them from the city is Prospiroh s will Meanwhile they re keeping 2000 teenagers in a bunker in Table Mountain as slaves growing food hydroponically which the cabal sells to maintain their powerful position We re in the midst of a horrible drought here in Cape Town Water restrictions mean we can only water our gardens three days a week before 9 am and after 5 I can hardly bear to water even at the allowed times So many pictures of dead cattle starved to death in the veld upcountry of people queuing for water from a truck because their town has completely run out I feel bad wasting water on a garden that s just there for my pleasure Maybe

  • helen brain - Writing venues 1 and 2
large spotted panties instead of writing he was very scathing My homework for the next two weeks is to try out 14 different venues for writing and select the best one Today I went to Commonground Coffee Shop in Rondebosch It makes me a bit uneasy because its run by a church BUT it has the best view in Cape Town facing onto the mountain that features in my Elevation trilogy It s noisy and the table wobbled and the food wasn t that great BUT I still managed to get into the blocked off zone I need to be in when I write It didn t make me happy though and I left after an hour Then I went to my favourite place Oasis Charity shop in Claremont It has tables outside under the trees so it s unusable for much of the Cape Town winter Today was a perfect sunny day though and I felt very happy sitting there It s incredibly cheap and I love the intellectually disabled adults who work in the recycling and bakery BUT I spent R200 at the charity shop and was so interested in all the things they were putting out for

  • helen brain - Happy Birthday Peter Klatzow
shitless Thirty years on I befriended him on FaceBook and our friendship has become one of my most valued and enriching relationships He s mellowed and I ve softened and as a result I ve learned far more from his virtual teaching than I ever did in the classes By reading his posts I ve learned to listen to music with my heart not my head I ve learned that

self conscious about my accent and vocab and my reading becomes stilted I can feel myself losing them and that freaks me out So after asking advice from my FaceBook guru friends I decided that what I need to do is to take props and simple costumes and to get the more extrovert kids to act out the scene as I read it Hopefully they ll be too busy laughing

  • helen brain - Facebook
occasional one who over promotes their work or whinges too much or posts one too many perky poetic description of their morning walk but in the main they re a great water cooler community who make working from home less lonely They re also kind generous with encouragement and have great taste in music But because they re faceless it doesn t feel like they re real It s too easy to be sarcastic or nasty when the person s not physically present and you re not likely to meet them face to face It feels like there are no consequences It s even easier to gang up with Facebook friends and attack strangers to mock people who look weird in photographs or YouTube videos to pronounce judgments on crimes when we know almost nothing about the people involved to vehemently and voraciously align ourselves with this group or that in the news and in doing so to create an Other It feels like it s a new form of tribalism We who are right and Them who are completely wrong and who must be crushed even though they re no threat I m quick to fall into this trap

by Maskew Miller Longman It was about two children who go to stay with their Grandparents in Cape Town and visit the house their grandparents used to live in before they were forced to move by apartheid They see the old fig tree in the garden which looks healthy but is riddled with borer beetles which are eating the tree from the inside out I used the borer beetle as
