loss of our beloved Juno Programme Coordinator of the Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon Campaign Not only did GAPA lose a dynamic colleague but to many a close friend and confidant Her journey living with cancer was one that was humbling and sobering Her life showed us that cancer is not a respecter of persons but that regardless of what life throws at us we can live life to the full harnessing the potential we have rather than merely surviving and waiting out our fate However also in January GAPA welcomed a new Occupational Therapist on board Meghan Krenzer We trust that her joining the team will add a special flavour to the work that GAPA does We have enjoyed the continued support of and partnership with African Impact who have been integral with our Aftercare Programme In consultation and work with the GAPA Occupational Therapist and grandmothers African Impact s interventions have served to be collaborative and developmental in the approach GAPA started the Each One Teach One program at the beginning of 2014 whereby a space is provided for the international volunteers from African Impact and the GAPA Grandmothers to share activities and learn new ones therefore gaining an understanding of the hegemonies around play and development present in the different worldviews of both the volunteers and grandmothers This has been extremely valuable as the mutual understanding allows the activity programs for the children to be more developmentally specific and allows for a greater care to be given to the children in understanding the value of play and culture The Each One Teach One Program has now begun collaborating with the peer educators children within the aftercare so that they can develop responsibility and skills in leadership so to promote healthy behavior and well being for themselves and their peers Watch this space to find out more about this exciting new programme Posted in Uncategorized Comments Off PRRR Men s Health Event Posted on November 27 2013 by OT DA GAPA The GAPA grannies raising cancer awareness on the side of the road On 22nd November GAPA hosted a Pink Ribbon Red Ribbon Men s Health Event According to the Health Calendar November is the month of Men s Health Prostate and Testicular Cancer Awareness and as GAPA we also raised our voice to further mobilise the community The day was well attended and it was a great success with speakers from CANSA Association Movember Navigators local churches GAPA and a couple of performances by the National Theatre The aim of the day was to raise awareness among men to take responsibility for their health receive the necessary screenings and spread the news regarding early detection and prevention It was a great occasion for the GAPA grandmothers and the men in the community to come together for a common cause and as usual the GAPA gogos did not disappoint and filled the day with passion joy and hope Thank you to ALL who made this day possible GAPA grannies

at the GAPA centre PRE SCHOOL BURSARIES It came to the management team s notice that there seemed to be a large number of small children present in the groups who were a distraction to the grandmothers Grandmothers in charge of these children were unable to afford to send them to preschool or creche An application to Victim Empowerment department of Social Services resulted in a donation of R50 000 This donation and some generous private sponsors enabled us to send 53 children of preschool age to their nearest preschool in 2004 This aspect of GAPA s intervention strategy has proved to be very popular and gives grandmothers a real boost to know that they can send their young grandchildren to a safe and stimulating environment while they have some time to themselves In 2006 145 children attended preschool through bursaries given by GAPA The Stephen Lewis Foundation sponsored 89of these while private donors Township Trust and Christ Church Constantia sponsored the others In 2007 146 children received bursaries The cost to send a child to preschool ranges from R100 to R150 per month Bursaries are awarded based on need and availability of funds Area representatives are responsible for checking that the child is attending preschool GAPA AFTERCARE In January 2007 GAPA started its Aftercare Service for 50 vulnerable children who attend the local primary school The headmaster and teachers identified children who went home after school to empty homes lived in shacks or were sickly Two grandmothers coordinated the enrichment programme for the children The children chosen to attend the aftercare enjoyed it so much that the word quickly spread and very strict criteria had to be used to limit the number of children who could participate in the activities There are currently 212 children registered at GAPA Aftercare and there are 5 grandmothers who act as aftercare teachers Today the GAPA aftercares aims to provide a safe space for vulnerable children to come to afterschool in the afternoon a stimulating environment and effective occupation based programs that will contribute to enhancing child learning and development and a context whereby intergenerational play is both celebrated and manifested so to enhance meaningful occupational engagement During the afternoons at the aftercare the children are fed homework is supervised and the children are kept in a safe loving environment where they are free to play and learn at will The grandmothers teach English literacy tell traditional stories and teach traditional songs The grandparents also teach the children how to do various crafts such as sewing crocheting as well as how to tend to community vegetable gardens and engage in these activities with them African Impact as well as their sister organisation the Happy Africa Foundation have also partnered with GAPA and together with the grannies the international volunteers run activity programs with the children four days a week The Each One Teach One Program is a space where the content of the programs can be co constructed by the grandmothers and the
