  • HOW THEY DO IT: BEHIND THE SCENES WITH THEO
how they make an animated video The creators of Theo are busy posting a series on their blog called Behind The Scenes Of The Theo Series and it is absolutely fascinating The first post starts like this One vision Six months Fourteen thousand four hundred frames of film A gaggle of artists and technical nerds One thousand eight hundred cups of coffee Four gobs of money a gob is 16 crate loads Those numbers represent a part of what it takes to make a ten minute episode of Theo Piece of cake We all love the behind the scenes look at our favorite movies don t we Bonus features that give us a peek into the lives of actors and directors as well as into the production itself its highs and lows perhaps some technical insights as to how they got full size humans to look like hobbits or how they got Superman to look like he s really flying Over the next several blogs I am going to write about the three production phases that go into the making of Theo Pre Production Production and Post Production I hope I can do it in three blogs Read the full

  • MANDISA IS AN OVERCOMER !
reflect my life that is reflected in this album Mandisa s newfound confidence manifested itself in her songwriting and she penned seven of the 12 songs on the Overcomer iTunes Deluxe album I feel like I m in a new place she says There are several songs that are just about rejoicing Overcomer is the latest in a string of impressive albums from the native Californian A graduate of Nashville s Fisk University she performed as part of the legendary Fisk Jubilee Singers but gained national acclaim when she placed ninth on the fifth season of American Idol She signed a deal with Sparrow Records and released her debut True Beauty in 2007 which earned her the first of three GRAMMY nominations She followed with a stellar sophomore effort 2009 s Freedom This year The Hollywood Reporter listed Mandisa in the Top 5 of Idol finalists with the most Billboard No 1s In 2011 Mandisa released What If We Were Real an engaging collection of tunes that included the effervescent Good Morning which she performed with tobyMac on Good Morning America This third studio album saw a breakthrough in Mandisa s career leading her to unprecedented record sales radio spins and tour audiences What If We Were Real also produced the hit single Stronger which topped the charts for five weeks and was the song Mandisa sang on Good Morning America the day Robin Roberts returned to the show after being on medical leave With a strong supple voice that is equally commanding on an up tempo anthem or a tender ballad Mandisa has earned a devoted legion of fans who appreciate not only her vocal gift but the heart that fuels her music On Overcomer Mandisa again serves up a musically inventive lyrically potent collection of songs that are all drawn from a deep emotional well Press On is among the most personal tunes I m proclaiming I m going to press on no matter what comes my way she says with a smile For me in that song specifically I m speaking about my weight loss journey I ve come a long way I ve lost over 100 lbs but I still have some work to do I m going to press on through this I m going to make it and I m going to get to the finish line I love Press On because it s a great work out song On the remix version which will be on the deluxe edition on iTunes I formatted that to be perfect for my runners the people who jog and run We put the beat to it and we looped certain phrases over and over again that will inspire them in their run That s the song that I put on when I m on my treadmill to help me keep putting one foot in front of the other The funky upbeat Face to Face is another powerful moment on Mandisa s new album I like to refer

  • CITIZEN WAY: TWO SETS OF BROTHERS PROCLAIM THAT LOVE IS THE EVIDENCE
camps retreats and youth group events and investing in heir fans who have been behind them from the very beginning All four band members grew up in strong ministry families Josh and Ben Calhoun the group s primary songwriters were heavily influenced by their mom s musical gift and the Calhouns were on stage singing at church from an early age The Blascoe brothers had a more urban upbringing than their bandmates and while their parents weren t musical they were music lovers exposing the boys to live shows by early Christian acts like Petra and Mylon LeFevre The Blascoe brothers each found music in their own way For David it started in fourth grade What actually made me want to play drums was a movie called That Thing You Do he explains His parents eventually set him up with a drum kit and gigs at church and stints in a series of high school bands soon followed Ben s instrument choices were based on what he didn t want My older sister took piano lessons and I was determined to not play that because I remember her having to pound away at practice he recalls adding I wanted to do something very different Maybe that s why as early as elementary school anytime he saw a guitar he d pick it up and try to play it Eventually he borrowed a bass from a friend and would sit in front of the CD player trying to copy what he heard whether it was Credence Clearwater Revival or The Cranberries At 16 he got his own bass and never put it down The beginning days of Citizen Way started when the two Bens met while studying at Judson University outside of Chicago Ben Calhoun was a music major drawn to the intricacies of theory and simultaneously also a big fan of pop radio with each new song a potential experiment in merging those two loves Calhoun says Judson was a pivotal place for me it s where I was able to develop and set my musical and ministry direction I m grateful for the school and it s such a cool privilege to serve as an Adjunct Professor there now As a freshman Ben Blascoe was playing his bass in the dorm one day when the Ben Calhoun poked his head in There was a connection and so when Ben Calhoun was ready to record some songs he had composed he asked the other Ben to join him in the studio He also recruited his brother Josh on drums then who had been playing with the band Augustana while in college After the project was completed the trio continued to play together eventually adding David as the band s drummer and Josh moving to keys Citizen Way has collaborated with acclaimed producer Seth Mosley Hawk Nelson Audio Adrenaline and Peter Furler former lead singer of Newsboys on their debut release With the help of Mosley the album merges the influences

  • ALL SONS & DAUGHTERS: LIVE
a place of freedom Jordan says of their approach to every concert and every Sunday morning service We want people to feel complete freedom to worship as they feel called to because Scripture says What we bring to the Lord is enough for Him And we trust that the Spirit lives in that freedom With a sensitivity and Scriptural grounding beyond their years All Sons Daughters Jordan who began leading worship in high school while still wrestling with the idea of church ministry embraces the tension between worship and real life When I came to Journey in 2007 we as a church were in a pretty heavy season of lament This town is so churched and this is an artist driven community and yet so many people here are living with shattered dreams The demographic here similar to the people we meet on the road are broken people people making their last ditch attempt at church or their first attempt at coming back says Leonard who grew up in church but had never written for worship before meeting Jordan in 2009 Most of our songs have been written with that healing season in mind We ve all thought Will God leave us if we leave him its just that most of us were never given permission to feel and express those feelings of brokenness in church That s the most beautiful part of doing what we do helping people find that freedom From the opening song of confession Brokenness Aside to Oh How I Need You and Reason to Sing songs for when life doesn t make sense All Sons Daughters LIVE showcases 13 transparent invitations including the unforgettable All the Poor and Powerless to get real and accept that you are loved Standards in the making like Reason to Sing and Wake Up give people hope to cling to when life even among the faithful doesn t make sense Nothing hits closer to home for Leonard than Your Glory a song of total surrender Being a new father I m seeing more than ever how much I need God When the song says My life is yours my hope is in you only and my heart you hold cause you made this sinner holy It is a constant reminder that I can t be the best father or the best husband but there is a God who can help me be the man I need to be It s a vulnerable moment for me every time we sing it The album also introduces two new compositions God With Us and Great Are You Lord Both songs came out of writing sessions with Jason Ingram Chris Tomlin Brandon Heath Jordan says For Great Are You Lord Jason had this line It s your breath in our lungs so we pour out our praise and we felt such a sweetness and depth in it we just ran with it When the duo dropped in on Passion 2013 to hear founder Louie

  • EVENING : MORNING  - THE DIGITAL AGE'S NIGHT JOURNEY
played out All we re trying to do is write music that sounds like what we listen to but worship music specifically You have to be aware of the church and make it accessible But we don t want to fit into any mold Worship music needs to meet the broader culture to make it more relevant And that s something Waldrop and company know how to do given that their very last David Crowder Band album reached No 2 on the Billboard 200 topped only by Adele s 21 the week of January 28 2012 Six months later The Digital Age embarked on the six music videos that became the Rehearsals EP and not long after that commenced work on Evening Morning The final Crowder record was a requiem mass Waldrop says so we thought it would make sense to progress from uncertainty and weariness to a place of rebirth and hopefulness This is uncharted territory There s much to recommend about this musical expedition which promises to reach an audience far beyond David Crowder Band territory Captured gallops along on a marching band beat B Wack cooked up in his home studio between rehearsals while the lyric revels in broken chains celebration Cause love has come to rescue me Your love has come to set me free Your love is all I need Waldrop sums up the song with a simple exclamation and explanation Wow What a way to start especially in this transition time for us We made it we traversed through death that s how it felt as a band People talk about the resurrection of Jesus and sometimes they forget that there s resurrection in everything Things die and it s OK because the God of resurrection gives birth to new things As for personal favorites Waldrop picks Believe as a song he treasures We were at the studio late one night and I d had a conversation with a friend earlier about how worship bands try to say things new when there are so many great old things to draw on It s from the Apostles Creed and the Nicene Creed It s so straightforward and it repeats and it s what we believe These words are so ancient they don t need to be modernized when I hear it it reminds me of going to church as a kid Ah yes but the music might remind you of an exciting trek through a modern rock mist one where the voices rise up with vaporous stealth and warmth And those who embraced Rehearsals will recognize the return of All the Poor and Powerless a song from the catalog of All Sons and Daughters It s built upon a spiral jetty of echo laden guitar with cymbals and vocal washes splashing around it like ceaseless waves in a sea of dreams This song made Rehearsals special for us Waldrop says We decided to give this one a proper recording and we re so happy with

  • KIM WALKER-SMITH & SKYLER SMITH: HOME IS FINALLY HERE!
this album HOME took on so many meanings as the project progressed explains Skyler We ve always traveled so much we ve know that home would have to be wherever we found ourselves We didn t want to force anything but we wanted to come together as a couple and say something personal and honest about our lives in relationship with each other and in relationship with God In that sense HOME couldn t be more opposite than the live corporate worship experience captured on the Jesus Culture records on which Kim s voice is most often associated From the beginning of our marriage Kim says we ve been very intentional about blending our lives taking every opportunity to be 100 completely together so this album really is a defining moment for us a creative endeavor that represents who we are as a couple and as worshipers who desire intimacy with our Creator Produced by Jeremy Edwardson and Jason Borneman HOME is a labor of love fusing together two very different approaches and personalities into one unified sound Kim who had recorded two solo records has long been a pop fan with a big voice and bold dynamic on stage presence a songwriter who pounds out lyrics faster than most people can sing them Skyler a creative visual designer who plays guitar and serves as an executive team member on the Jesus Culture staff is most at home in an Americana folk vein a meticulously poetic songwriter who writes and rewrites and rewrites some more So much like a couple of creative newlyweds attempting to merge her floral tapestry curtains with his ripped leather armchair Skyler Kim pushed through the frustration of creative barriers to craft a fresh new sound all their own Not only is the breadth of Kim s vocal gift more obvious in a studio environment but the beauty of the couple s harmony is essential to the mix Looking back over the past almost two years it s so easy to see now how the Lord was in it Skyler says God had put this in our hearts and even when it wasn t quite happening we knew he would create a blend that was distinctively us He directed us when to start it and inspired the worship content in it and we ve come out on the other side with something were super happy about From the soothing acoustic opener of Your Voice to the benediction of My One Only HOME is a finely tuned marriage of songs that speak to the kind of love that always pursues always trusts always shows up In your arms my heart is resting I have found my home in you the One I was made for from Home Here themes of human love and God s love are woven so organically it s often impossible to see the seams Unstoppable Love a dramatic multi layered effort intensified by Kim s bold voice began as a love song but
