  • KJ-52: DANGEROUS !
KJ 52 vulnerably unveiling his own weaknesses At first I felt it came off too judgmental so I flipped it and put it on myself he reveals It s risky to do something like that but if that means I have to put myself into an uncomfortable place to allow someone else to come with up with a resolution then I m okay with that That only comes from the confidence God gives me and it s just me being me faults and all Aside from putting a microscope towards his own regrets and shortcomings the collection also chronicles a series of compelling issues like drugs divorce and racism even the prejudice that sometimes pops up within the church s walls The latter is particularly evident across They Like Me a collaboration with the Grammy nominated Lecrae We could ve done the typical crunk for Christ type of song but thought why not address racial issues in the church KJ lets out with a laugh The result is a prominent black rapper and a prominent white rapper talking about our unique perspectives like Lecrae feeling rejected in the black church but embraced in white churches and me growing up first in a black neighborhood then in a white neighborhood and only feeling accepted in a multi racial church I ve never heard that spoken between a white guy and a black guy with so much transparency We re not writing for sympathy but simply writing from our perspectives Yet Dangerous even has a cheeky tribute Do the Bill Cosby about the iconic comedian TV star who KJ had the honor of meeting during a Get Motivated seminar for businessmen where he frequently serves as an emcee DJ also warming up audiences for the likes of George Bush Colin Powell and Rudy Giuliani I was accidentally shaving in Bill Cosby s dressing room and he sat me down when I was done and told me I needed to do a TV show recalls KJ I spent my whole childhood watching him on TV and this was obviously a huge honor He also told me he noticed I bring out the childlike nature in people and bring joy into their lives that brings them back to when they were kids again I always make sure to balance the serious subjects with my sense of humor and try to make my records reflect both sides of that Regardless of the topic being discussed Dangerous is tied together through undeniably infectious beats pulsating programming and production sure to fit between a fan s palette of everyone from Lil Wayne to Drake and Eminem In addition to KJ overseeing the album it includes tag teams with producers Tedd T Mute Math Delirious and Aaron Sprinkle Deftones Hawk Nelson Jeremy Camp both of whom pushed the performer further than he s ever delved before Tedd did a good lion share on the project and that really freed me up explains KJ His producing style is very

  • 7EVENTH TIME DOWN: ALIVE IN YOU
This year we re branching out We just got back from California and Colorado Listening to Howard Miller Eric Van Zant on guitar and Cliff Williams on bass it s obvious this is more than a band it s a brotherhood bound together by a shared commitment to God to each other and to making great music It goes back a long time We started our first group when Austin was 11 I was 12 and Eric was 15 says Howard We ve been playing music together for years We all grew up in the same hometown in the same schools We played t ball baseball the whole bit We re best friends same ministry minds same goals Williams recalls their shared enthusiasm for God and music being a magnet that drew them together and helped them grow together There was a point when we said Let s be in a band and play music because it s fun and let s sing about God because it s what we know he says but there was definitely a point about three or four years back where the focus turned from playing music to ministering in the best way we know how As musicians the best way we know how to minister is through music Like all young musicians there came a time when the members of 7eventh Time Down began wrestling with the future and whether music was a career a calling or a carefree pastime There was a moment where I said okay God do I need to stop doing this Or do I need to keep doing this I thought this was the plan you had for me but if that s something different I ll follow you down that road I felt a huge confirmation in the spirit For me that s when everything in my life started to shift focus and change The other members experienced similar epiphanies The funny thing is it wasn t us as a band saying Hey guys let s have a band meeting and we re going to do this recalls Williams It was God in our own lives as individuals He was calling us for our own purpose and there was personal change in our own lives discovering within ourselves what it means to chase after Jesus That personal journey we were each on became part of the whole journey that 7eventh Time Down was going on The journey really kicked into high gear when the band met musician writer producer Scotty Wilbanks DecembeRadio Unhindered Echoing Angels backstage at a show He really helped us with songwriting and taught me as a writer to be real hook minded and real melody minded says Howard If you are playing rock songs or worship people want to know the words and they want to sing along 7eventh Time Down recorded their BEC debut with Wilbanks at the Rockporium in Atlanta Sonically it s got a lot of heavy guitars because that s

  • BERNICE CROWDER: IN HER OWN WORDS
of complications during childbirth I on the other hand became ghastly ill after the birth of my second daughter At first I lost weight at an extreme rate I looked anorexic I experienced severe palpitations and I disregarded it thinking it s because I was active too soon after her birth In December 2003 I started swelling up My body was retaining fluid if you saw me then you would have though I was a different person In January of 2004 it just got worse It was like I went to bed perfectly healthy and got up the next morning looking like a pumpkin My beloved husband rushed me to the hospital where I was admitted At that point the doctors could not explain why but I had left ventricular heart failure I remember laying in that hospital bed asking God Why me Why Why Doctors were baffled because I was young and healthy with no history of serious illness I used to get flu once a year that s how healthy I was They did a series of extensive tests After months and months of invasive tests it was discovered that I had Graves disease Anyone who knows about this dreaded disease will tell you that it alters certain features on your face especially your eyes you get a bulging neckline The medication I had to take caused weight gain By this time in my life I thought I was over these self image issues but all of this knocked my lack of self confidence even more I would constantly wear scarves even on the hottest day and I would try to hide my eyes in any possible way The world is filled with insensitive just plain nasty people so called Christians who would make malicious remarks about my weight changes enlarged girth even my bulging eyes At that point in my life wanted to become a hermit and hide myself from the world It took time for me to get over it It was not instantaneous Through God s grace and unconditional love I made peace with who I was and loving me I realised that life was too short to have unnecessary hang ups and during this trying time God took me through a process of self discovery Music became my haven I wrote many songs expressing how I felt and this led to God healing me emotionally I started accepting my bone structure my body type my face and who I was as a person I started believing the scripture that I am fearfully and wonderfully made that I was beautiful no matter what I looked like and that He created me with a purpose All things work together for the good of those who love God In life we may not understand the why s all I know is that it took an unpleasant life threatening experience for me to allow God to work on certain undesirable issues in my life that I could never

  • JOHN MARK McMILLAN: ECONOMY
ones the death of a loved one a friends divorce McMillan explains It s a tension we all live in On Economy that tension is electric From the first drum beat of album opener Sheet of Night to the post rock cacophony that closes out Seen a Darkness there is a palpable weight that permeates the album This is Gospel music run through the filter of the Southern night This is electrified folk the music of a man who cut his teeth on Dylan and Kerouac and Springsteen all the while haunted by the presence of the Father and the Son and the Holy Ghost Economy is the sound of glory and shame murder and grace darkness and daylight and all those spaces in between And it shows up in the songs in the delicate beauty of Love You Swore in the rowdy drawl of Daylight and the quiet solemnity of Murdered Son For those who have been following McMillan s steady rise as an artist Economy will not disappoint McMillan has again grown as a lyricist and a songwriter this body of work finds the North Carolina based artist at his most mature And sonically the album is far greater than the sum of its parts served by the production team of Jeremy Griffith and Joel Khouri performed by the musicians that have supported McMillan across the world The team have created a perfect accompaniment to McMillan s searching searing vision of a world that is not as it should be But it s not just a broken world that McMillan s singing about with Economy he s pointing out across the horizon across the waters to the hope of something much more than the devil s broken hearts and counterfeit currency We have seen a night but we

  • WHO IS CHRIS TOMLIN?
have come to expect from Tomlin yet a little more musically adventurous I wanted something that would just explode through the speakers Tomlin says When you hear the drums it makes you want to move but has the same heart of melody same heart of worship We didn t want to lose that It s really cool because Dan had never done any worship music before never produced any music written for a congregation It was good that he could work with somebody in a different vein and let those worlds mix Ed knocked it out of the park He always does and Dan did as well They approached it from a different place but it s really great to work with both and I think people are going to really enjoy to hear this music because it has that fresh sound that you can only get when you kind of mix it up On And If Our God is For Us Tomlin recorded a new version of Our God a song that has already been enthusiastically embraced by audiences through the Passion conferences It s not going to be what they are used to he says with a smile It s the opening track of the record and I cannot wait for people to hear it The first single I Will Follow has already become a hit at Christian radio immediately taking root in the hearts of listeners with its powerful message propelled by Tomlin s upbeat delivery Another of the highlights of the new album is Majesty Of Heaven That is a simple worship song that I wrote on an acoustic guitar he says and Dan has taken it and put this great beat to it No Chains on Me shows a different side of Tomlin s musical personality Matt Redman and I wrote the song but now it definitely doesn t sound like a Chris and Matt song he says It s really fun and I can t wait to play that live for people to hear In addition to writing with frequent collaborators like Redman Tomlin also stepped outside his comfort with new co writers We connected with Jason Ingram for this album Tomlin says of co writing Lovely and I Will Follow I kept hearing his name and we made it happen and man we have this really special chemistry songwriting together Tomlin is well known as one of the industry s most accomplished songwriters and that gift shines yet again on his newest album especially on such powerful tunes as I Lift My Hands which he co wrote with sixstepsrecoreds Passion founder Louie Giglio The song is just this picture of someone reaching out to God and saying Lord I m just remembering your faithfulness and I just need you now in my life I ve seen your faithfulness through the years of my life and I m calling out again I lift my hands to believe again Awakening Tomlin wrote with Hillsong s
