end it wasn t a problem if it didn t work out But stupidity he couldn t deal with Also he knew the value of a tantrum He could threaten one and that was good enough he didn t actually have to lose his temper Quite a few times in the band they would come to sticking points in meetings or trying to sort out which mix of a track they liked and they d all start neh neh neh laughs just little kids squabbles And he d just say Look if you cannot get your acts together I am out I will be gone I don t care laughs and all of a sudden everybody grew up So he didn t actually have to lose his temper Once Freddie died you got involved in caring for people with neurological conditions What made you do that Once I got my head out of a vodka bottle when Freddie died I felt I needed to use the experience I gained looking after Freddie And what better way to do that than looking after people who need looking after So I worked at a neurological ward in London There was MS Parkinson s It really makes you remember how lucky you are not to have one of these diseases These diseases are not picky You can live in a palace or you can live under a bridge they don t care They can happen to anyone So I spent a few years doing that Why didn t that last I gave it up because of Freddie A newspaper published that I was one of Freddie s ex lovers and that started going round the ward People started wondering whether I had AIDS I was making their stay in the hospital worse So by choice I left because people were scared of getting AIDS that was the thinking in those days Do you have a favourite song by Queen Mine is something totally off the wall It s a song called My Melancholy Blues I think it s because all the biggest Queen hits are full of 230 guitars 100 voices But My Melancholy Blues has Freddie on the piano Freddie s vocal drums and a bit of base It s just a real wonderful blues song If I had to go for one of the biggies it would be Don t Stop Me Now because that was Freddie s biographical song at the time That was when he was living life 24 hours a day Did Freddie have a favourite Somebody to Love He loved the gospel choir Aretha Franklin Michael Jackson How might Freddie have reacted to the growing freedoms of the LGBT community This is where people may not be happy about Freddie s attitude For him this was a personal issue I don t know that he was happy about being gay becoming a political issue He didn t answer this sort of question because answering it put you

young and eager high school kids came together to form BiggFunMusic which was then called Soul Solutionz Over time the number of members in our group got less and less because dedication and passion towards the BiggFunMusic business venture was not equal says Sophakama Cele As we continued to DJ and learn more about this industry and business it just became evident that the skill of disc jockeying alone would not sustain our grand vision We had to constantly look at what was trending what had the potential to trend and how we would fit into it he says One thing that they ve learned about the entertainment industry is that very few things are constant says Cele We have got this far by doing things by ourselves and also spending an immense amount of time aligning ourselves with relevant people conducting research and constantly knocking on doors hoping that someone else will recognise our talent says Pakade The one factor that allowed us to succeed is not being afraid to do things ourselves We have very few people outside of BiggFunMusic that ensure that we re doing things right We simply take it upon ourselves to do what we think and want We re totally different from other Cape Town Djs says Sibusiso Macalambisa Firstly we don t define ourselves as DJs more than we do as performers When it comes to hustling and trying to build the brand that is Bigg Fun Music we ve had a lot of doors shut in our faces we ve been in situations where we don t have a roof over our heads or something to eat but the love has kept us going hence we refuse to call each other friends we re brothers says Pakade One of the biggest lessons they ve learnt on their rise to the top is respecting their brand and not drawing any negative attention to themselves We work on ourselves as much we can in terms of the craft and how we want to be seen by the greater public and our fans We ve learnt to be patient and build a tangible name as well as create and respect the relationships we form and we re still learning he adds Simbongile Wani says We hope that our music touches and inspires other young people to go out there and grab those platforms of opportunities and be whatever they aspire to be We re trying to kill this mentality of fellow black South Africans who don t like supporting or celebrating other black South African musicians who represent success and become successful Our communities and the lifestyles that we come from is a constant reminder of why we should be successful in what we love and more BiggFunMusic is a prime example of how one can make a name without a record label and managers In fact Bigg Fun Music aspires to one day be an Indie label in their own right The internet is

email from him saying I got a scholarship to study at the University of Southern California He must be good right As a teenager Marcelle started playing in the Delft Big Band which aims to keep kids in the area out of trouble I don t remember struggling to learn trumpet says Marcelle My family always wanted me to study something like Law Actually I didn t want to be a musician either But jazz changed my life and I remember putting in the hard work and practising for four or five hours a day Ian Smith the musical director of the Big Band can understand that Marcelle has really outstanding natural ability which is rare At his age 19 few of us are playing that way But hard work is also necessary And you need to be committed and act professionally Talent is clearly not a problem The tricky part is following through with his plans despite the little practicalities and rather large obstacles that can get in the way At college there are no jazz trumpeters so it s a little difficult as a jazz student to get by he says All of the teachers are classical trumpeters For classical the technique is good and classical and jazz are not totally different But some things like tonguing techniques and articulation are different in jazz Other issues are less straightforward The scholarship to USC would only cover my studies says Marcelle I have to raise funds for accommodation And it depends on my grades at UCT But things are certainly looking up He has an incredible opportunity and the staunchest of fans in his corner He s a very patient quite child says Gabiela Anthony Marcelle s mother I never had any problems with him He s still my
