    practice standards The application of a stringent Code of Practice for professional heritage practitioners The raising of awareness amongst authorities and civil society of the necessity for professional standards in conservation and heritage resource management and The promotion of education and training in the field of conservation and heritage resource management MEMBERSHIP Due to the multi disciplinary nature of heritage assessments and the management of heritage resources we encourage applicants from many academic backgrounds Membership of the Association is open to any individual deemed by the Association to meet the minimum requirements set out in the Standards for Accreditation These members then become Accredited Professional Heritage Practitioners Candidate membership is available to practitioners who do not satisfy the required academic qualifications and or professional experience but who work in the field and wish to work towards becoming accredited members Any person may join the Association as a Friend subject to their support for the objectives and Codes of Practice of the Association All applications for membership are considered by a sub committee of the Association established for that purpose Annual subscriptions are charged for all categories of membership of the Association The 2015 fees are currently Members R600 p a

  • III. Standards for Accreditation 2012 | APHP
    of heritage resource management and related fields and includes practitioners in private practice and in the employ of industry all three spheres of government and NGOs 2 1 Members shall satisfy the following core requirements 2 1 1 formal academic training in fields such as architecture and architectural history planning archaeology history oral history landscape architecture urban design palaeontology museology curating heritage and museums management environmental and geographical sciences forensic pathology law other relevant disciplines and 2 1 2 formal specialist training in conservation or heritage resource management including degrees diplomas and specialist occasional courses or apprenticeship as defined to a recognised expert in the field for a period of at least two years is also regarded as formal specialist training and 2 1 3 experience in one or more of the following activities in a heritage related context documentary and archival research historical research site research including measuring and excavating surveying conservation studies of sites or regions site analysis including environmental context assessment of significance development of heritage related informants or design indicators impact assessment construction and supervision of construction design regulating and drafting legislation heritage resource management and design control curating conserving interpreting community and I AP consultation oral records and history indigenous knowledge systems other heritage related activities and 2 1 4 working knowledge of current heritage resource planning and environmental policy principles and legislation 2 2 An absence of either or both formal training and formal specialist training in any of the fields listed above can be compensated for by professional standing and or public recognition and or experience in the field 3 1 Professional Heritage Practitioners In order to qualify for accreditation as a PHP the following minimum standards must be satisfied 3 1 1 Academic Qualifications 3 1 1 1 With a four year university degree as defined A degree equivalent to an Honours degree in architecture archaeology history planning landscape architecture urban design or palaeontology or similar and An appropriate specialist one year or more degree or diploma or appropriate occasional courses in heritage conservation or heritage resource management or museology curating or An apprenticeship as defined of at least two years to an expert recognised by the Association in the field of heritage management and the practitioner s field of specialisation or 3 1 1 2 With a three year university degree as defined A three year undergraduate degree as defined in architecture archaeology history planning landscape architecture urban design or palaeontology or similar and An appropriate specialist postgraduate masters degree or appropriate diploma or occasional courses which together qualify for professional accreditation in architecture archaeology history planning museology curating landscape architecture environmental science or urban design or similar or An apprenticeship of at least four years to an expert recognised by the Association 3 1 2 Professional Experience Regardless of the academic qualifications for accreditation at least two years of subsequent appropriate professional experience in at least two of the activities listed under experience in paragraph 2 1 3 above are
